What Does the Emerging Leader Need?

Writer's picture: Megan RobinsonMegan Robinson

83% of organizations say it is important to develop leaders at all levels, but only 5% have fully implemented development at all levels.

56% of organizations are not ready to meet leadership needs.

7% of companies have accelerated leadership programs for millennials.

There’s an overwhelming leadership gap everyone seems to talk about but without solutions. Our expectations of businesses and their values have changed in the blink of an eye.

Most of us know how important leadership is, but how in the world do you teach, train and develop it?

As I look around at my generation and the evolution of business I see how absent Self-Leadership is from the conversation. From programs, resources and even messaging and how desperately self-leadership is needed. It’s needed to address conflict, to manage relationships, to communicate effectively, and most importantly to become more self-aware. When you think about most challenges in dealing with people, a little self-leadership is the key ingredient needed to find the solution.

63% of millennials feel their leadership skills are not being fully developed by their employers.

As a millennial myself I’m mostly embarrassed at the reputation my generation has. That’s why you will rarely (if ever) hear me admit it. I’m often networking in a room where those around me are bashing my generation, or worse yet am directly asked “how to deal” with “them.” I know first hand their struggle, miscommunications, confusion, and the challenge of growing and developing as a leader.
